Bye Psychiatry

Prof Ng: 'After today, it's going to be at least 3 years before u come into contact with Psychiatry again.'

His words left me pondering, whoa, he's right, I gonna sit for my finals in 10 months time and start my career soon. There is no Psychiatry posting in Housemanship. I'm truly glad we are at least able to learn Psychiatry in medical school. I have to say Psychiatry patients are certainly difficult, most of them have very poor awareness of their illness. They may tell you they are well for the past 1 year or so, well in fact they have been behaving abnormally/aggresively and this could only be told by their family.

Talking to a Depressive patient is difficult. The stressful event that is so overwhelming easily exacerbate the depression in them. If I were them, I even question myself would I be able to withstand the stress? Or I might be like them, fell into the depression trip. I certainly comprehend the helplessness in them, I came across many close relatives/friends who were as depressed as they are. I have to say friends and family are the best support elements. My friends and I jokingly remarked that no matter what happened in coming future, we have to keep in contact, in case we need each other, or else you may see my face appeared on front-line due to a complete suicide attempt.

Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder patients are not easy either. They mumble a lot of irrelevant things, not answering your questions, suddenly shun you away because they lost interest to talk to you. It is very saddening to see teenager to be diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Most of them have their condition deteriorating and probably could not even get themselves a stable job, placing a burden onto family. Be aware of it, if suspected, get an assessment. It's always better to detect it early.

Have to admit Psychiatry problems are so rampant nowadays, it can be co-existing with any medical conditions you name it.

Not to forget all the lecturers, Prof Z who I mistakenly (or maybe everyone) assumed she is the most sternful lecturer. Well she is certainly not, she can be so motherly sometimes haha. Still, Prof S won the first position in me, the dedication and interest to teach students really inspiring. I learn the most from him, he may be the inspiration for me to major in Psychiatry later.

Hmm that's all. Next Orthopaedics! Let's be more diligent.
